In Wendlingen am Neckar, a suburb of Stuttgart, a pioneering timber parking structure is currently under construction. The project not only sets high standards in terms of design and user experience, but also emphasizes sustainability and cost efficiency. Built to be entirely climate-neutral, the structure combines contemporary architecture with environmentally conscious construction and provides generous parking spaces as well as flexible options for future repurposing.
Designed by herrmann+bosch Architekten (Stuttgart), the curved timber skeleton structure will serve as a mobility hub in a central location between the railway station and the emerging Otto-Quartier district. The five-story timber building is being executed by PLETSCHACHER HOLZBAU from Dasing (Bavaria) and was structurally engineered by knippershelbig from Stuttgart.
What makes this project unique is not only its distinctive curved form, natural spruce aesthetics, and column-free parking areas, but also its potential for future conversion into office or residential space. The access ramps are removable, allowing space for light wells to be added if needed. Also forward-thinking is the reversible, non-destructive disassembly of the timber structure – made possible by the use of SHERPA plug-in connectors and the consistent avoidance of composite materials.
Expected to be completed in June/July 2024, this innovative building stands out not only for its eco-friendly construction, but also for its forward-looking stance on reducing car dependency. The timber parking garage includes a Park & Ride function and an integrated bicycle garage, supporting sustainable mobility solutions in the region.
A key component of the project is the use of SHERPA system connectors, with approximately 1,000 of the largest connector type being installed. These not only enable a high degree of prefabrication and fast on-site assembly, but also ensure the structure’s stability and long-term durability.
The timber parking garage in Wendlingen is a milestone in sustainable construction, demonstrating how modern architecture and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand. We are proud to be part of this innovative project and to contribute to a greener future.
