Fire resistance of timber connections – tested up to R120

Fire resistance of SHERPA timber connections: tested and designed according to ETA-12/0067 up to R120.

For the fire design of timber connections, not only the required timber cover but also the detailing of the joint gap is relevant.

The provisions of ETA-12/0067 are based, among other things, on fire tests in which the test specimens were constantly statically loaded throughout the entire fire exposure. Tests were carried out for fire resistance periods up to R120.

One important aspect for practical detailing concerns recessed installation: ETA-12/0067 permits a joint gap of up to 5 mm without requiring an additional fire protection strip within the joint.

The permissible joint gap of up to 5 mm facilitates practical installation on site, as fire resistance requirements do not require a particularly narrow joint.

Alternatively, the joint can be protected using the SHERPA Fire Stop strip.

The ETA provides the corresponding design rules and detailing requirements for fire resistance classes R30, R60, R90 and R120.

Further details can be found in ETA-12/0067, Annex 6.
